Why the ingredient matters

A cup of flour and a cup of honey occupy the same volume, but honey weighs almost three times as much. That is why a reliable cup-to-grams or cup-to-pounds converter must ask what you are measuring.

This calculator uses one US cup as approximately 236.6 ml and one metric cup as 250 ml. It uses 28.3495 grams per ounce and 453.592 grams per pound.

Questions answered

Measurement conversion FAQ

How many grams are in one cup of flour?

Approximately 120 grams for a level US cup of plain or all-purpose flour. Scooping directly from the bag can produce a heavier cup.

How many grams are in one cup of sugar?

About 200 grams for granulated sugar or 220 grams for packed brown sugar.

Can cups be converted directly to pounds?

Only after choosing an ingredient, because volume and mass are different kinds of measurement.

Are US and metric cups the same?

No. A US cup is approximately 236.6 ml; a metric cup is 250 ml.
