How oven conversion works

Celsius and Fahrenheit use a precise mathematical conversion: °F = (°C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32. Fan ovens circulate hot air, so recipes commonly reduce the conventional setting by about 20°C.

Gas marks are different. They are stepped settings rather than a continuous temperature scale, so this converter uses a fixed lookup table and reports the nearest standard mark.

Use the recipe as your first guide

Ovens cycle above and below their set temperature, and calibration, shelf position, cookware, and airflow all affect cooking. An inexpensive oven thermometer can help you understand how your own appliance behaves.

Questions answered

Oven conversion FAQ

What is 180°C in Fahrenheit?

180°C conventional is 356°F. Many recipe charts round this to 350°F because domestic ovens are usually set in larger increments.

What is 180°C in a fan oven?

A common guideline is to reduce a 180°C conventional oven setting to 160°C for a fan oven.

What is Gas Mark 4 in Celsius?

Gas Mark 4 is approximately 180°C conventional, 160°C fan, or 356°F.

Are oven conversions exact?

No. Conversions are useful approximations, and real oven temperatures vary. Follow the recipe and appliance guidance, and check food for doneness.
