“Amount used” and “pack size” must use the same unit, such as grams with grams or millilitres with millilitres.

The formula

Used ÷ package × price

If 500g of flour is used from a 1,500g bag costing £2.40, the flour contribution is 500 ÷ 1,500 × £2.40 = £0.80.

Step 01

Match the units

Enter used amount and pack size in the same unit.

Step 02

Add every ingredient

Small amounts of spices and oils still contribute to cost.

Step 03

Divide by portions

Use the actual portions the cooked recipe produces.

Planning cost, not selling price

For household planning, ingredient cost is a useful comparison. For a food business, a selling price also needs labour, overhead, waste, packaging, payment fees, tax, and a target margin.
